As if. As if I needed to. As if I wasn’t already. I don’t know what the deal is, but this year I am so in the mood, it’s crazy. But that’s just me. Perhaps there are some people who aren’t for some reason. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Tech Tuesday and all the rampant commercialism and consumer insistency may have put them off. Maybe they’ve been so busy they haven’t had time to draw a breath and see the light(s). Each year speeds up and it may strike them that it just was Christmas last week or last month. Who knows?

What works for me is the music in all it’s variety. From traditional carols, Nutcracker plum fairies, Hallelujah choral extravaganzas, Motown Santas, jokey renditions, rock and roll transformations, jazzy interpretations, and earnest folk messages and everything in between and beyond, there is something out there for everyone. For musicians, there’s opportunity for every little drummer boy and girl. For listeners, it a seasonal feast with layers and depths of meaning and emotion. When I hear all those tunes, corny and otherwise, I’m glad that it’s that time of year. And I’m glad to be here and be a part of it.

For me, it’s an excuse to tune into and revisit old favorites, to stumble onto and try something new. Each year there’s a chance to revive old memories and discover and create new ones. The season is long enough that everything can have its turn. All that rockin’ around the tree, feeling the warmth of home and family, goofing on Santa and Rudolph, reflecting on giving and receiving, remembering why Christmas is Christmas, and, basically, being in the spirit.
Let the caroling begin!
