What!? Not even around the corner. Valentine’s Day is today!
Music has always guided me in matters of the heart. What to say, what to do, what to think about it all. Of course, there’s my own hands-on experience, personal observation, and deeply held beliefs and wishes. But direct transmission of longing, promises, reflections, and a million mysterious and beautiful emotions running through me, educating me, inspiring me have always been foremost in my life and music is the source of it all.
No lyric is too banal, if backed up by feeling, propelled by the energy of a band that means it, and delivered by a singer who can’t help but tell it true, no matter how many times he or she has sung it. Barry White wasn’t kidding about the ecstasy. Aretha has had more broken hearts than any one person should ever even think about. Brahms was a lovesick guy with a big beard.
Tears have been shed, smiles have been heard, and tender emotions have been shared in every part of the world. Beneath budding trees, in sunlit fields, and in shadowy alleys. On boats, on trains, and in the backseat of countless Fords and Chevys. Around campfires and on sidewalks. In the front row and in the balcony. Under covers and onstage. You can’t control it. You can’t stop it. The only thing to do is to get up and dance.
Melodic patterns trace the ups and downs of relationship. The bass provides an earthy bottom that is the ground for love. Big hearts create the backbeat. The strings sing so sweetly and the horns shout out the joy I feel.
Love makes it all possible. It holds everything together. As someone once said, Love is supposed to be beautiful, so gorgeous and divine. Makes you feel like a thousand Mickey Mouses, running up and down your spine.
